Walnut wood
Walnut solid wood flooring is a deep dark wood in colour; it has lighter sap streaks within it giving the floor a great deal of character. Walnut hardwood flooring is regarded as the best quality wood for flooring and tends to cost more as the growth is slower than say an oak tree of the same age.
When exposed to sun light Walnut can experience a lot of colour change. The unfinished wood is lighter than prefinished and the colour will change after the finish as been applied. It is a hardwood of medium density, although not as hard as some other hardwoods it is still a very hardwood and suitable floor for domestic hallways, lounges or dining rooms. This product was used in larger and more affluent schools, museums, and private members clubs in and around London for many years.
Walnut flooring has an unmistakable beauty it has a noticeable texture in the grain, but without a high contrast which many people associate with high quality furniture.
Walnut takes to oiling or lacquering and finishing very well, in some cases oils bring out the full beauty of the wood. Especially if it a high quality wax oil, while lacquer tends to make Walnut appear slightly lighter than when oiled. The wood is easy to work with using hand or machine tools making it a superb choice for high quality wood floors.
In the world of hardwood flooring Walnut with its distinctive grain is the definition of high quality and luxury.
However like all species there are some points to look out for that are very specific to Walnut. North American / English or any of the European grown or manufactured and particularly the quality German manufactured walnut products tend to be much higher quality, than the far eastern woods.
This is because the wood is seasoned for longer, and in one manufactures case for up to two years before final finishing; this means that when the wood arrives to you it is without natural stress, so is less likely to fail in service. On the other hand far eastern wood whilst just as hard is very impressionable and susceptible to large movement expansion and contraction between winter and summer, which causes gapping larger than one would expect, and in extreme cases can result in splitting and bulking upwards causing complete failure in service.
